Things to do in Marmaris

All the way along its stunning Mediterranean coastline, Marmaris is dedicated to keeping tourists happy and entertained. More than 200,000 visitors pour into the region each year, attracted by the reliably beautiful weather and seaside activities.

Marmaris in a nutshell

This former fishing village in south-western Turkey, famous for its water sports - particularly diving and sailing - features several marinas, as well as beaches. Like all of Turkey, it's culturally diverse, combining elements of eastern and western traditions due to the influence of the peoples that formed its history, including the Persian, Roman and, of course, the Ottoman empires. At a relatively low four hours of travel time from the UK, it's very popular with British tourists.

Plenty to do in Marmaris

Whether you're enjoying an all inclusive family holiday or a cheap solo getaway, in Marmaris, the water is the main attraction and offers so many opportunities that you could easily spend your entire holiday flitting between the beach and your hotel. There are several waterparks, including the hilltop AquaDream, which affords a bird's-eye view of the area while you keep cool and play. However, there are some very tempting tours that start at Marmaris. On the jeep safari into the local mountainous countryside, for example, you will need a water pistol for the fight that you'll have with your fellow travellers and guides and, of course, there's a trip to a Turkish bath, but one of the most popular tours is the daily boat trip. On board a relatively small sail-boat, you'll travel around the area, enjoying the copious food and drink in between short stops at a number of attractive places. These include the Phosphoric Cave, where the phosphorous lends a beautiful and eerie light to the walls, Green Sea bay, which is perfect for swimming and diving and you'll also go inland to visit the little shops and cafés in the picturesque village at Turunc. Marmaris also hosts a good range of events, including a series of concerts that takes place in the amphitheatre throughout the summer and a festival devoted to the tango! However, many of the events are water-based, as you would expect, such as the popular annual yacht race to Rhodes. If you have booked a last minute holiday and haven't had time to investigate what's going on, don't worry, because there's so much to do that you'll have a hard time fitting it all in anyway. Marmaris' nightlife is famous, featuring drag shows and karaokes as well as live music and every kind of dancing you could possible want – including belly-dancing – all within walking distance of the hotels. Some of the best beach front attractions include Bar Street, which is genuinely a street packed from end to end with clubs, bars and restaurants of all kinds. Further into the town, you'll find the Armutalan area, where you can still go clubbing until four in the morning, but it's a little quieter and a lot cheaper.

Beach fun for all the family

Some of Marmaris' beaches are quite stony, but you'll still enjoy the sun beds that are for hire and all the swimming, snorkelling and boat-trips that are the life-blood of the area. However, the best beach is a little south of Marmaris, at Icmeler, with a beautiful sandy stretch, offering the same facilities and activities as Marmaris. It's a great place for a family holiday, because everything is so close to the many hotels, which offer a great range of packages, such as all inclusive deals, which are excellent value if you have several mouths to feed! Even if you are busy enjoying organised activities, you'll be spending a lot of time on the beaches as many of the tours start at the waterfront.

What weather is in store?

With its Mediterranean climate, you'll see very little rain, if any, in Marmaris during the holiday season – from May to October – and the temperature is unlikely to drop below 25 degrees centigrade between June and August, so those who prefer things a little cooler tend to come out during September or October, while it's still comfortably warm.
