Things to do in Fethiye

Fethiye

Beaches

No one could possibly come to Fethiye without sampling the beach. Catching a bus, or a dolmus, to any of the nearby bays such as Aksazlar, Samanlik, Kuleli or Boncukluis is straight forward. You could even walk if the heat's not too intense. Around 45 minutes on a dolmus will take you to the Ölüdeniz beach where there is a lagoon of calm crystal clear waters which is safe for children making a great option if you're on a family holiday. The bay is regarded as one of the most picturesque beaches in the whole of Turkey so there are plenty of photo opportunities. There are nearby restaurants and cafes, too, where you can grab some food or a cold Efes to cool off.

Intriguing Rock Tombs

For those who want something beyond just a beach holiday and like to step back in time and sample some history, the Fethiye rock tombs are definitely worth adding to your itinerary. The Lycian rock tombs are easily spotted as they are carved straight into the cliff face Petra style. It's a bit of a jaunt uphill to the tombs but you'll be well rewarded with magnificent views across Fethiye once at the top. There's a restaurant if you're feeling a little peckish or thirsty after your ascent.

Fethiye Market

The vibrant colours of the fresh fruit and veg are as much a photo opportunity as a shopping experience. Some make a day of it giving themselves plenty of time to hone their bartering skills. Choose a fresh fish from the fish market and take it to one of the nearby restaurants where they'll cook it for you for a small fee. It will be served to perfection along with fresh bread and side helping of salad. There are, of course, the usual wares of handbags, shoes and clothes, and all manner of cheap authentic fakery at its unashamed best. You'll love the buzz and dynamism of this place, but make sure you drink plenty of water as it does get rather hot. Mornings are best to avoid the heat.

Saklikent Gorge

Another must see that is less than an hour from Fethiye is Saklikent Gorge, the largest canyon in Turkey. Make sure you're dressed in clothes that you don't mind getting wet (in fact a change of clothes is a good idea) and also have decent foot gear. If you time your visit right, then you could avoid the crowds and enjoy the immense cliff faces and tumbling waters in relative solitude. Walking between the towering cliffs and the accompanying roar of gushing water will have you feeling you've entered a living thing as walk through the gorge.

Tlos Ruins

With fantastic views across the Xanthos Valley, ruins from ages long since past blend effortlessly with picturesque mountainside villages. In this ancient Lycian settlement you'll discover tombs and sarcophagi from the 3rd century BC and remains from the fortress from the Ottoman era. Roman baths and an ancient theatre will also transport you back into ages long since past.

Relaxed Nightlife

The nightlife is fairly relaxed in Fethiye. You'll find a good choice of bars and entertainment in the old town, and the live music emanating from the bars can make for a very pleasant atmosphere along the waterfront.

Whatever you're looking for in a holiday, Fethiye is a great option. A good time to go is May or September leading into October when it's amply hot enough for most people but not too much. It depends how hot you like it, of course. No matter whether you're looking to relax completely and stay around the pool by booking an all inclusive, or want to do some exploring, Jetline is sure to have the perfect deal for you and have been providing great travel deals to satisfied holiday makers since 1978.
