Kefalonia's Distant past

No trip to any of the Greek islands is ever complete without a foray into the ancient past, and just such a portal into days long gone by can be found in the form of the remains of the Temple of Apollo just 3 km away from Skala on the road to Poros. It is believed that this once impressive edifice, which now consists of three Doric columns and foundation stones, was built right the way back in the 6th century BC. History enthusiasts will also enjoy the 3rd century Roman mosaics that form an artistic part of the remains of what were once wealthy Roman villas. You can discern depictions of various animals within the mosaics from bulls and boars to panthers and leopards. The mosaics are now shielded behind glass for preservation's sake, but still offer an immediate connection with the distant past.
