Things to do in Ialyssos

Ialyssos
Rhodes old town has an endless choice of restaurants and bars, so it's a great option for a night out and can be easily accessed by bus or taxi from Ialyssos. While there, check out Rhodes harbour, once home to the mighty Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, from where you can venture on a day trip to nearby Turkey or some of the smaller Greek islands.

The long stretch of beach in Ialyssos is a mix of sand and shingle with plenty of sun loungers and parasols stretching all the way to Kremasti. The waters are fairly shallow here making them great for families with children and non swimmers alike. The beach even affords glimpses of the coast of Turkey, and it is popular amongst windsurfers too, paying host to a number of competitions throughout the year. There are plenty of opportunities to get in the water and have a go if you’re so inclined. If you’re looking for jet-skis, then head for nearby Ixia where you can also hire kayaks for an afternoon’s splash about. Around the beach area you’ll find plenty of kiosks and mini markets, along with cafes and fast food outlets where you can easily grab a bite to eat or a cool drink while on the go.

Just across the road running parallel to the beach are a great selection of luxury hotels catering to all styles and tastes with their well maintained and lush gardens, pools, and tennis courts. There are some great all inclusive deals to be found amongst these hotels for that perfect sit back and unwind holiday in the sun. You won’t be short of places to visit come evening either, as there are plenty of bars and Greek style tavernas where you’ll be able to sit and watch the sun sinking into the Aegean while you kick back and enjoy a cold beer or a cocktail. What a great way to finish your day off in and around Ialyssos!

History enthusiasts will be interested to know that the town is named after the nearby ancient city of Ialyssos, which in turn was named after the mythical grandson of Helios - Greek god of the sun. The remains of the ancient acropolis are well worth a visit with its fascinating remnants of ancient temples dedicated to various gods of the Greek pantheon. Close by you'll find the 5th century monastery of Filerimos, built by the Byzantines with its superb views of the area. The monastery can be visited from Saturday to Monday between 8:30 am until 3 pm. Remember to dress appropriately. You may also wish to visit the underground chapel of St. George, inside of which are what remains of 15th century wall paintings. As with all Greek destinations, there are plenty of opportunities to step into the past and be reminded of time’s passing.

There are plenty of reasons to book your family holiday to Ialyssos, and with a great choice of cheap deals to be found to this lovely part of Rhodes, why hold back? So come and see just why so many come back time and again to this lovely part of the beautiful island of Rhodes.
