Things to do in Skala

Skala

Eating out and nightlife

Nightlife is fairly relaxed in Skala and really centres around a selection of restaurants and traditional Greek tavernas, along with a wide selection of bars providing nightly entertainment. There's enough to satisfy all tastes and budgets.

Nearby countryside

Skala is also an ideal spot from which to explore some of the delightful surrounding countryside of the area with its vast array of wild flowers of every conceivable colour. The countryside around Skala is also well known as prime bird watching territory and is actually ranked by experts as one one of the best in Europe for spotting rare and exotic breeds.

Kefalonia's Distant past

No trip to any of the Greek islands is ever complete without a foray into the ancient past, and just such a portal into days long gone by can be found in the form of the remains of the Temple of Apollo just 3 km away from Skala on the road to Poros. It is believed that this once impressive edifice, which now consists of three Doric columns and foundation stones, was built right the way back in the 6th century BC. History enthusiasts will also enjoy the 3rd century Roman mosaics that form an artistic part of the remains of what were once wealthy Roman villas. You can discern depictions of various animals within the mosaics from bulls and boars to panthers and leopards. The mosaics are now shielded behind glass for preservation's sake, but still offer an immediate connection with the distant past.
