Things to do in Malia

Malia

When to Go

Malia's warm temperatures are inviting throughout the year. Summer months provide 12 hours of sunshine, almost no rain and the warmest temperatures, particularly in July and August. Temperatures above 20 are not uncommon from May to October, with the mercury rising into the 30s during July and August. If travelling to Malia for sightseeing or to explore the countryside, spring and autumn provide more comfortable temperatures that hover around in the mid-20s.

Where to Stay

Malia hosts a good collection of accommodation options, from luxury resorts to affordable guesthouses. For travellers looking for a luxury resort, the sophisticated Hotel Cretan Park delivers an unbeatable experience with top amenities and services. The dazzling hotel complex is set among stunning natural surroundings. Guests can relax on decked terraces that line an inviting lazy river. A successful blend of traditional and modern style, this contemporary yet comfortable hotel sits in a secluded area away from the hustle and bustle of Malia. For younger travellers and families, there are plenty of options to unwind and relax in Malia. The Ilios Malia, Elkomi and Hotel Malia Dedalos are close to the action with all the right amenities. These hotels are centrally located and close to bars and clubs, and feature large swimming pools. For a more relaxed stay, the Hotel Frixos and Apartments provides plenty of space in a laidback atmosphere. Accommodations are simple but have all the essentials, including kitchenettes and buffet breakfasts. The hotel is just 100 metres from the strip and 1.6 kilometres from the beach.

Attractions & Events

As the sun sets in Malia, the resort becomes an electrifying entertainment capital with an unstoppable party atmosphere until the sun rises. Clubs and bars in the resort town often attract some of the biggest DJs from around the world, creating an unforgettable setting for a night out. Events celebrating disco, dance, techno and other types of music attracts clubbers from across the UK and Europe. Many bars, clubs and restaurants are based along the town's main strip, which runs between a sandy beach and the town's Minoan palace. Besides partying, Malia is a great destination for its beaches. The resort features five kilometres of golden beaches with fine sand and stunning views of the Bay of Malia. Six beaches offer plenty of choices and space. You will never be far from a broad choice of bars and restaurants that border Malia's fine beaches. For watersport enthusiasts, you can head out on a jet-ski or banana boat from one of several shops at Glozanie Beach. Family-friendly Sun Beach has an inviting children's lido, while Potomas Beach is a popular choice among locals looking for a quiet place to relax. There are also plenty of cultural and recreational activities to make the most of your stay, including scuba diving or unwinding at the WaterCity waterpark, exploring Samaria Gorge or Imbros Gorge, shopping on Beach Road, trying traditional dishes in the old town, or finding genuine crafts at the Aghios Nikolaos Market or Kritsa. Malia is also a gateway to some of the most archeologically significant sites in Crete, including historic Heraklion. In town, visitors can explore the ruins of a Minoan palace. One of the largest cities in Greece, Heraklion is just a 45-minute drive from the resort town. Visitors exploring this part of the island can see the impressive Bronze Age ruins of Knossos, the Venetian fortress of Koules and the Venzir Mosque, which dates back to the nineteenth century and the Ottoman Empire. From Heraklion, visitors can also travel by ferry to Athens, Santorini or Rhodes.
