Depending on what type of holiday you enjoy, it's worth remembering that the summer months are very popular with tourists. So if you're wishing to avoid the masses, then October is a good option, and the sea's had time to warm up too, making those crystal clear waters even more inviting!

Walk from Fira to Oia

Take in the spectacular views as you walk along the Caldera from Fira to Oia. The walk usually takes about 3 hours, so ensure you have a decent pair of walking shoes and plenty of water. At the end of your walk, enjoy some lunch and a cold frappe (iced coffee) in one of the many bars or cafes in Oia. Walk the winding streets of Oia replete with its characteristic white washed houses. Many claim that Oia enjoys the best sunset in the world. You decide.

Experience the Caldera by Boat

One of the best ways to see the Caldera is by taking a cruise, which is a refreshing way to spend a hot summer's day. The 3,500 year old volcanic formations will fascinate as you sail by, perhaps heading towards the nearby volcanic island of Nea Kemeni where you can take a few close up shots of the crater. Take a swim in the hot springs, then try out the natural mud baths which, it is claimed, will work magic on your skin.

Ancient Thira

No visit to the Greek islands would be complete without visiting some ancient ruins of days gone by. Walk the timeworn streets of Thira, and hear the faint echoes of the ancient agoras that would have been bustling marketplaces all those centuries ago. Different periods mingle together here as remains from Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine cultures blend into one right before you. The Temple of Dionysus dates from the 3rd century BC as does the Sanctuary of Artemidorus. Older still is the Sanctuary of Apollo Karneios which is thought to date back to the 6th century BC. Ancient Thira is a great place to just let your imagination take over and get swept up with the historic resonance of the place.

Visit Some Villages

Head away from the tourists and discover some unspoilt villages such as Pyrgos which overlooks the whole island. Its Venetian castle, traditional whitewashed houses, and authentic tavernas make it a very pretty village indeed. You may also like to try Karterados with its picturesque square and traditional windmill, along with its quaint cobbled streets and cave houses hewn out of the rock.

Enjoy the Nightlife in Fira

Fira really come to life at night, and there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy a cold beer or cocktail at the end of a day's sightseeing and watch the sun go down. Other villages enjoy a good nightlife too, although Fira probably has the most options in terms of bars and restaurants. Down by the beaches you'll find bars too, such as those in Kamari, Perissa, and Pervolos for an evening's entertainment.

Without a doubt, Santorini is a beautiful holiday destination and the island offers some fantastic luxury accommodation that will really enhance your stay in this delightful part of Greece. And don't forget to look for last minute holidays too, as some cheap deals can be found that could have you jetting off sooner than you think. If you want to take the stress out of your holiday, then why not book a package holiday? Whatever option you choose, you can be sure that you'll be thoroughly smitten with the delights of Santorini.
