Flying to Croatia



Most UK tourists arrive in Croatia via the airport hub at Dubrovnik. Voted as one of the top sea ports in the whole of the Mediterranean, it is a great place for a holiday without venturing any further along the coast. Dubrovnik’s airport lies some 20 kilometres from the city itself. However, it is well served by public buses and taxi services which operate all day long. Most locals travel around the city by bus and, if you have not arranged a private transfer, then the network is relatively easy to work out for yourself. However, it is worth noting that the city’s bus drivers are not able to offer change for your fare, so you need the exact money in advance.



The Coast



The famous Dalmatian coastline extends along the Adriatic facing Italy. Croatia has long been a favourite for holidaymakers from all over Europe because of its beaches and this goes back to when the country formed part of what was then called Yugoslavia. There are plenty of resort towns that sit between Dubrovnik, in the north, and Split, to the south. The former is a mixture of the modern and the medieval all in one city. Split, on the other hand, is famous for its Roman architecture, much of which survives to this day. Croatia’s coastline is one of the most dramatic in Europe and the mountains seem to sweep right up to the sea in some places.

 

The resorts of the Makarska Riviera are particularly worth seeking out. One of the most visited towns on the coast is Trogir. The town is stuffed full of palaces, belfries and cobbled alleyways in the old quarter. At the centre, there is a central square from where you can easily navigate without becoming lost. Trogir was founded by the ancient Greeks from in the third century BC and is much-loved with many tourists returning again and again

Nin has one of the best beaches in the country. Here, the strip of sand seems to go on for ever. The town has a few beach bars and is relatively unspoilt for such a visually stunning area. Split’s beach at Bacvice is another one that is great for a family holiday. The shallow bay makes bathing safe for kids and non-swimmers.

Climate



Croatia is blessed with good weather in summer. The holiday season extends from May to October, but you can go earlier in the year and take a chance on the temperature being good enough to hit the beach. The season is busiest in July and August when the average temperature is at its best, at 27 degrees. July sees the least average rainfall of any month.



Activities



Many tourists like to hire boats to explore Croatia’s wonderful islands that are dotted around. Brac, Hvar and Lopud islands are great places that you can only reach by boat. Hire your own or take part in an organised expedition. Don’t miss out on seeing the sunset at Zadar. It was said to be one of film director Alfred Hitchcock’s favourites. Also, check out the wonderful waterfalls at Plitvice. Set in a national parkland, they are well worth a walk through the forest to get to.

Notwithstanding the other provisions of this Section 5, we may retain your personal data where such retention is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation to which we are subject, or in order to protect your vital interests or the vital interests of another natural person.
