Eating out in Turkey

Greek cuisine with a spicy and exotic twist is one way to describe the food. A meze is the traditional offering, which is a meal of up to 15 dishes and the Turkish variety has some additional flavours from the Middle East mixed in. Kebabs are skewered meat specialities which are slightly different in each region and are delicious for lunch or dinner. Stuffed aubergines, peppers and tomatoes are always on offer and really are a tasty side dish. Mint tea, served back and sweet, is served everywhere at any time of the day along with strong Turkish coffee. Buffets offer up pizza, pasta, chips and chicken if you prefer something more familiar for your dinner, or try something different while the opportunity is there. Turkey's Beach Resorts

Antalya is a very popular area for foreign tourists. The city itself is large and busy with more than 2 million residents. There is a Roman port, crowded markets, an imposing Mosque and spectacular architecture to take in. The most popular resort within the city is Lara Beach which offers a variety of All Inclusive hotels offering everything needed for a great family holiday. They all back on to a fabulous beach and usually have water sports included in the price, like windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing. 

Alanya is dominated by its fortress high up on the hillside which can be seen from almost everywhere. This resort has a sophisticated feel, with a nice promenade dotted with sculptures and a choice of brightly-lit shops selling designer-inspired goods. There are fast food chains here, like McDonalds, along side traditional Turkish restaurants and good sea-food eateries. There are two beaches to choose from, one is sandy and the other has rocks and pebbles. 

Side has beautiful beaches to lie on, a harbour, temples, churches, great bars and a choice of restaurants. Everything needed for a perfect two-week holiday in Turkey. There are some great All Inclusive holidays available in Side in 3 star, 4 star and 5 star hotels. In the Dalaman region popular holiday spots include Fethiye, Oludeniz, Icmeler and Marmaris.

Marmaris has a lively night life with a wide choice of clubs and bars to visit, many of them open until dawn. There are also some family hotels which offer kids’ clubs and mini discos to keep little ones happy. Self-catering apartments offer a low cost holiday option, and with the huge choice of restaurants available in Marmaris, you could eat out in a different place every night if you don’t feel like cooking.

Icmeler is about 8km from Marmaris and is a little quieter with a less-crowded beach. The mountains and pine forest backdrop give this small town a tranquil feel. Here the shops have clothing as the main product with fabrics on offer at the local markets. There are boat trips that leave from Icmeler that take you past the Lycian Tombs which are carved into the rock face high above the water. 

Olu-Deniz is the most photgraphed beach in Turkey that has a beautiful mountain backdrop. The sand is soft and the turquoise sea crystal clear. The accommodation here comes in the form of All Inclusive resorts or smart boutique hotels.

Perched above Olu-Deniz are the twin resorts of Hisaronu & Ovacik high in the mountains. It’s not far to Fethiye from here either. It is a low-cost base and offers a different atmosphere to the beach resorts of Turkey.

The marina at Fethiye is a treat for the eyes. Spend some time wandering along the cobbled streets of the old quarter and looking up at the weathered buildings. This traditional town has some great gift shops and some pretty cafes. This is a perfect place for a couples’ holiday to Turkey.

At little further along the coast from Fethiye is the charming resort of Kalkan. This place has a traditional feel thanks to the white-washed buildings, a weekly market and old harbour. There are some excellent restaurants serving fine food here, so it’s a nice place to take things easy. You won’t find anything like a McDonalds here, it’s all local dishes cooked to perfection. The beach has water sports available but it is a calm place to catch the sun.

There are a lot of things to do and see in Dalaman. Excursions include visits to Cleopatra Island, scuba diving courses, boat trips and Turkish nights. While you’re here, a Turkish bath, or a Hammam, has to be experienced. The ritual includes sitting in a steam room, lying on a heated marble slab where you’ll be scrubbed clean, then rinsing off with cold water to close the pores. You’ll be tingling clean and ready for anything. For those who like walking, the Saklikent Gorge is roughly a 40-minute drive away. This is the second largest gorge in Europe and offers a cool alternative to the beach during summer. 


Bodrum airport is the gateway to Gumbet, Bitez, Torba and Bodrum town itself. Located in the south west of Turkey, on the Aegean coast, this area is colourful and fun. 

Bodrum has some amazing nightclubs and a strip of drinking houses, know locally as Bar Street. During the daytime, this peninsula also offers some culture in the form of a 600 year-old castle and a couple of truly interesting museums. There are two water parks to be found in the Bodrum area, just right for the children and teenagers to enjoy. There really is something for everyone.

Gumbet is a lively resort popular with younger tourists and families. Neon nightclubs and good-value eateries are everywhere here. There are good, cheap holidays to this resort and often some really affordable last-minute offers. The hotels and apartments tend to be smaller, family-run places in this part of Turkey. 

A growing town on the edge of the Aegean Sea, Altinkum has all the ingredients for a lazy Turkish holiday. There are plenty of bars and restaurants and beach water sports, but it’s not as busy as the larger resorts.

Kusadasi was a quiet fishing village, but it has grown into a lovely holiday spot. There are family friendly hotels here and the Aqua Fantasy Water Park is nearby. There’s also an entertaining Dolphin Show at Kusadasi that makes a great holiday treat. It is also possible to nip over to Rhodes or Samos in Greece from here. There are regular ferries which can take you over for a little taste of these Aegean Islands.

Weddings in Turkey
