Getting to know Morocco

Exotic souks, riads adorned with hundreds of tiny tiles, and local delicacies laced with mouthwatering spices. Holidays to Morocco are every bit as enticing as they sound. That’s not to mention the beaches! Long swathes of sweeping sand edged with glittering turquoise sea make getaways here the ultimate in relaxation.

Like many countries, Morocco has its fair share of differences, and a holiday here can be as laid back or as packed as you want to make it. Pick a hotel in one of the bustling cities – Marrakech, Casablanca, or Agadir for instance - or opt for a spot that’s away from the hustle and bustle and choose an all inclusive resort set in its own peaceful grounds.

Barter your way round the medina and return to your hotel laden with beautiful leather goodies, sip on calming mint tea in a city square, and feast on tagines of meat that melts in your mouth.
Whatever you choose to do, holidays to Morocco are bound to have you mesmerised and desperate to return as soon as you’ve only just left.

Things to see and do

Gaze in amazement at snake charmers in Jemaa el-Fna, Marrakech’s main square, take a trip out into the Atlas Mountains and wind your way past traditional Berber villages then look down on the city below. Or simply lie back on a sun lounger on the beach and spend your holiday in Morocco horizontal.

Morocco is undoubtedly North Africa’s hippest of hangouts and often features high on travellers’ lists of ‘must see’s’. No trip to Morocco is complete without exploring the exotic souks and bartering for bargains, tasting at least two tagines, and indulging in a Turkish bath to get your body completely beach ready.

Get lost in alleyways, wonder at mosques like the Hassan II Mosque which sits grandly on the shores of Casablanca, and indulge your cultural side with a visit to the Museum of Islamic Art in Marrakech. It’s full of wonderful displays of Berber and Tuareg textiles and jewellery, and striking azure blue pottery.

On the beach

Beach lovers will adore holidays in Morocco - head to Agadir for the ultimate in sun-worshipping sands. Palm parasols, sun beds and beach bars line the sands behind, while glittering waters gently lap the bay in front. The beach is a stunning swathe of 9km golden sands, and believe us, it’s every bit as idyllic as it sounds. What’s more, there are hotel options for all budgets. Luxury all-inclusive resorts are plentiful and mean you can enjoy your holiday while never worrying about a thing. Those looking for something cheaper, meanwhile, can choose from hotels that are still close to the beach and usually feature their own pool.

Beach holidays in Morocco aren’t just about Agadir (though it is the country’s number one resort). Essaouira is about three and a half hours away on a bus from Marrakech so even if you’re based in the city you can get out to the beach. Essaouira, with its fishing harbour and old world charm of its fortified walls makes a great day out from Marrakech. Once you’ve wandered round the narrow alleyways, pitch up on the beach and relax.

Weather

If you’re a sun-seeker and you enjoy bathing in temperatures a good 10°C above your average UK climate, jet off on a last minute holiday to Morocco. In the summer months of June, July and August, temperatures can soar up to 38°C (and sometimes higher) and even in December you can expect highs of around 16°C. For somewhere in between, opt for a holiday in either April – May, or September – October.

Why Morocco is a must

Where else can you go that’s as exotic, interesting and as graced with good weather as Morocco? More importantly, where else can you go that ticks all these boxes and is only about a three-hour flight from the UK? Holidays in Morocco offer the chance to experience a taste of a different culture, bask in sun that Britain rarely sees, and indulge in treats such as shopping, food and pampering that cost pennies in comparison to prices on our own high streets. What’s more, you can easily mix city pleasures with beach retreat time, and if you’re after a real expedition, you can trek up into the Atlas mountains and see traditional Berber villages. Morocco is a melting pot of experiences and one that’s a definite must-see.
